Penguins Post Season Moves

May 8, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

With the Flyers 2nd round exit tonight to the New Jersey Devils, I’ve been left wondering what Ray Shero might have up his sleeve this off season for our Pittsburgh Penguins. Unfortunately we may not be able to keep everyone from last years roster, but that might not be a bad thing in all cases either. I think when we got Martin and Michalek, they were considered the #s 2 and 3 available free agent defenseman at the deadline.  It was a huge get for us.  They are our two top-paid defenseman, at a decent price vs. market, and they’re locked in for a few more years.  Martin is this year’s press/fans scapegoat.  Maybe he’s getting old.  I’m not sure what happened to these two, really.  The fans will call for a move or two (Martin, then Michalek), but I’m not as quick there.  First, and I say this a lot for a lot of life situations, if you ditch your prom date you’d better have a prettier girl waiting for you to ask her out.  Yes, we have some young kids, but are they as good/better than what they would replace, or are they just cheaper and green grass on the other side?  Plus, if someone is selling something — they must have a reason.  If somebody puts something on eBay, you’d better find out why before you buy it — other GMs aren’t stupid and will see/have seen the same thing Shero and the press/media has seen, if their stock has really gone down that much.

Staal stays.  He is the man.  He showed up for every game and was our MVP in the playoffs.  Your paramount concern below is why we need Staal.  Maybe they’ll try him on a top-2 line as they’ve teased for years.  Maybe he’s just that good at center to not want to move him from there.  He’s not really hurting for minutes on Line 3 with his PK duties either.  Keep him 100%.
Fleury disappointed me tremendously.  I’ve had his back since the beginning.  He was a monster last year, but he never puts up the stats where you can say he’s elite.  He’s never been a 2.1 GAA or a 94% Save % guy, for the most part.  I just like some stability in net, and he sure provides that.  Let’s not forget the dude just tied the wins record when we missed 87 for most of the year and tied a guy that had 66 an 68 playing in front of him.  Game 2 hurt, and maybe Game 6, but there were a lot of flukies in there and defensive lapses.  Many teams don’t keep goalies long and I like our continuation here.  One guy will get hot, they’ll give him $6m/year for a long-term deal, then replace him with a rookie and try to ship him off.  The market is fat with overpaid big-name/flash-in-the-pan goalies.  (AKA let’s not be Philly the past 4-5 years, OK?)
The Penguins‘ overall attitude at dealing with instigators needs to mature.  I still can’t believe our captain swatted away a glove that a guy was reaching for — that was really embarrassing.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

Reebok Pittsburgh Penguins Draft Day 2011 Flex Hat

April 9, 2012 by · Leave a Comment

We are just 2 days away from the start of the 2012 NHL playoffs ladies and gentleman! And what better first round matchup   than the Philadelphia Flyers. You can’t script this stuff any better. After the WWF throw down 2 weeks ago, we can only assume that both teams will be skating with a couple chips left on their shoulders as we head into Wednesday’s game in Pittsburgh. Between John Tortorella‘s post game rant (I hope it was worth the $20,000 fine) and Peter Laviolette‘s school boy scolding of Pengin’s coach Dan Bylsma you could definitely say the smell of playoff hockey is in the air. Let’s hope our boys are up to the challenge!
